Last week Dan Erdmann found some refuge for a day on Lake Audubon and this time he s heading a little farther south to a stop on the Lewis and Clark trail He shows us another inexpensive and nearby getaway in this week s Dan s Destinations Dan Erdmann KX News Today our destination is the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan just outside of Washburn Both of these areas are filled with history art and culture and we re going to go talk to two people that know a lot more about all those things than I do Dan Erdmann KX News First we stop at the interpretive center which is definitely worth the small price of admission David Borlaug President-Lewis amp amp Clark Ft Mandan Foundation We have five distinct areas that visitors will want to take in- the Lewis and Clark exhibit area the Fort Clark exhibit area and then three art galleries the art of Vern Erickson the art of Henry Lawrenson and the art of Carl Bogmer Dan Erdmann KX News Borlaug says the Carl Bogmer gallery is unique because it s the only time that all 81 of his watercolor aquatints have been on display together Along with art the center also has many Indian artifacts Sculptures and one item that s impossible to miss- this 30 foot dugout canoe just like the ones Lewis and Clark used Although they are the main focus of the center the two famous explorers are just a small part of this attraction David Borlaug President-Lewis amp amp Clark Ft Mandan Foundation It s not all about Lewis and Clark Lewis and Clark is our great hook We go way deeper into the story of all the great stories we have to tell here along the Missouri River Dan Erdmann KX News Just down river from the interpretive center is the historic replica of Fort Mandan which was made to look like it would ve when Lewis and Clark actually stayed here Wendy Spencer Foundation Vice President We have the rooms furnished They basically look like the captains had just gone out for a hunt so you can look into the rooms and see the sleeping quarters Dan Erdmann KX News And around fifty men lived within these walls Unfortunately you can t spend the night here but you ll find plenty to do during the day and for a very small price Near Washburn Dan Erdmann KX News FULL ESSFULL CG And when traveling to his destination Dan drove 136 miles roundtrip from Minot using four dollar gas at 20 miles per gallon for a cost of 27 20 Plus admission for 2 people to the Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan at 7 50 per person Total cost of this trip is around 42 20 and if you have time make sure you stop by it s open year-round
