The Time Before the Bridge
A local landmark will be closing this week The North Dakota Department of Transportation will transfer traffic to the new Liberty Memorial Bridge this Thursday Only two lanes of traffic will be open It ll likely be an emotional day as the eighty-five-yr-old bridge is closed for good Brad Feldman talks to a man who lived through the time before there was a bridge connecting the two communities Take a look at this It s a picture from the State Historical Society of North Dakota showing the beginning stages of a pier for the Liberty Memorial Bridge It s just one of the many pictures in the collection showing the construction of the bridge It s a time in history Ed Lahr can recall Ed Lahr Remembering the Liberty Memorial Bridge I am going to have a memory of it being a great benefit to both Bismarck and Mandan and actually brought them into on city because it was quite and effort to get across Ed Lahr is ninty four years old His dad was in charge of the committee responsible for promoting the bridge Ed Lahr Remembering the Liberty Memorial Bridge They had to keep it moving and that was a pretty important addition to the area But before the bridge Lahr says moving across the Missouri River was slow Ed Lahr Remembering Liberty Memorial Bridge Highway ten was a forerunner of I-94 went right up to there and then you got on a ferry boat and went across the river You know where you turn and go down onto the bottems there on this side well that road went down into the bottoms and the ferry landing was right about where the intake of the water plant is Lahr says the ferry could only handle about four or five cars at a time He says at times it would take close to two hours to get across the river because of the long lines of vehicles waiting to get onto the ferry So when people in Bismarck-Mandan were able to see this it changed the landscape of the the Missouri River in the area Just like the new bridge will when it opens later this week Brad Feldman KX News As far as the new bridge traffic will be moved from the old bridge to the new bridge at eleven in the morning this Thursday Both bridges will be closed until four in the afternoon

Scoria Bay Ramp Open
Boaters on the big lake have been dealing with a shortage of boat ramps for years This year most ramps are open This includes one ramp that has been closed since the year 2000 The Scoria Bay ramp in Sakakawea State Park is the surprise story of the year for park officials This spring this area of the lake was just mud Today this boat ramp sits about fifty feet into the water John Tunge Sakakawea State Park Kind of a perfect storm where we had a good snow pack out in the mountains this past year and good rains to the west of us and you couple that with the downstream concerns with flooding and the lake has come up significantly more than what we anticipated Tunge says the rising waters has many people in the area upbeat He says if the water continues to rise it could help the fishing on the big lake John Tunge Sakakawea State Park short term it might not be a big boom The fishing is not just going to turn on because of that I think if you talk to the game and fish and the fishery people they are going to say that as we move back up into that mid 1825 range it is going to significantly help the long range look for fisheries on The Lake level as of this afternoon is at 1825 1 feet up about seven tenths of an inch from last week

Old Boat Ramps Back in Use
Lake Sakakawea is on the rise but so is Lake Oahe south of Bismarck In fact the river level has climbed 19 feet in about 24 months That means access to the river is improving In some cases boat ramps that haven t been open in six yearsare back in use Tom Gerhardt has the story It s a sight to seetrees swallowed up by water near Beaver Bay west of Linton Rising water on Lake Oahe means more access to the water Ralph Its improved immensely people don t have to drive down two tracks as much anymoreand they re able to access these areas right off of highway 1804 Here s a great example For the first time in six years boaters can access the river from inside Beaver Bay Ralph At the beach we have a plank boat ramp therebigger size boats have been getting in I even saw one pontoon so its a good ramp Just up the road on 1804 the North Beaver Bay ramp is also in good shape A few miles down this gravel roadyou ll find direct access to the river Ralph And also our north Beaver Creek ramp we ve made some improvements on that one added some gravel and some grading and that ramp is also in very good shape And there s more While no work is being done to the Hazelton boat rampa lot of work is going on around it to benefit those of you wanting to enjoy the water Ralph Adding a culvert which is going to extend the drainage area right to the Missouri River and we ll be able to utilize that area for parking That s because of a safety issue we had Gabrysh says now boaters shouldn t have to cross highway 1804 to park He says around 30 new parking spaces will open up when construction is finished this fall Tom Gerhardt KX News Gabrysh also says the Langeliers Bay ramp near the state line is also open You can find a complete listing of open ramps at the Game and Fish website Go to gf nd gov under the fishing menu
