Teen drowns at Bottomless Lake


TRYING TO HELP HIS COUSIN OUT OF A LAKE BECOMES THE STATE S LATEST DROWNING VICTIM IT S THE 5TH DROWNING DEATH SO FAR THIS YEAR -- AND THE SUMMER BOATING SEASON IS JUST GETTING STARTED THE TEEN DROWNED AT BOTTOMLESS LAKES STATE PARK NEAR ROSWELL THIS WEEKEND JULIE FERTIG HAS THE DETAILS AND WHAT STATE OFFICIALS SAY IS AN ALARMING INCREASE IN DROWNINGS IN 2008 the first thing I saw this limp body To me his life was gone I just started praying for him and his family to be strong ALAN CURTIS DESCRIBES WHAT HE SAW AT BOTTOMLESS LAKES THIS WEEKEND WITNESSES SAY 17-YEAR-OLD JESUS LUNA-OLIVARES DROWNED WHILE TRYING TO SAVE HIS 15-YEAR-OLD COUSIN THE 15-YEAR-OLD MADE IT OUT OF THE WATER ALIVE -- BUT HIS RESCUER DID NOT they started working on the first victim And he started signaling to the water You know he was doing this And I guess the life guard finally snapped hey well there s something else out in the water So they all proceeded to go into the water and look MINUTES LATER -- LIFEGUARDS FOUND LUNA-OLIVARES BODY THAT MAKES FIVE DROWNING VICTIMS AT LAKES ACROSS NEW MEXICO SINCE MARCH STATE PARK OFFICIALS SAY IT S BEEN YEARS SINCE THEY VE SEEN THIS MANY DEATHS IN MARCH A BOAT CAPSIZED KILLING TWO MEN AT ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE IN MAY A MAN DIED WHILE DIVING OFF A ROCKY SHORE INTO CONCHAS LAKE THEN IN JUNE A MAN DROWNED WHILE JET SKIING IN SUMNER LAKE FOUR OUT THE FIVE VICTIMS ALL HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON -- THEY WEREN T WEARING LIFE JACKETS STATE PARKS OFFICIALS TYPICALLY SEE AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT TWO LAKE DROWNINGS A YEAR WITH ALREADY TWO TIMES THAT MANY DROWNING SO FAR -- OFFICIALS ARE STRESSING ANYONE WHO HEADS OUT ON THE WATER NEEDS TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET REPORTING LIVE JF EWN4
