Lake Level Rising Quickly
Lake Sakakawea today is higher than it s been in 4 and a half years In three months Lake Sakakawea has risen 12 feet and Game and Fish says they expect it to go up even more The big lake is at 1819 the highest it s been since December 2003 Now the level is rising so quickly that some boat ramps have been swamped The rising level is the good news And the better news is that there are existing boat ramps to take over for the washed-out ramps Debbie Kuehn reports on what s happening at Parshall Bay Debbie Kuehn KX News If these folks would have tried to launch their boat here last year they d have likely buried it in sand Harley Rath Brendel s Bay This ramp has been about six-seven years since we ve used it Debbie Kuehn KX News Over the years the people who live and work around Lake Sakakawea have grown somewhat used to finding new ways to gain access to the water the difference this year is that the water isn t disappearing it s actually rising Harley Rath Brendel s Bay Lotta rainfall water s coming up We re up ten to twelve feet from where we were this spring Debbie Kuehn KX News Yes in a place where sandy dunes once swept over weeds and rocks fish hooks now bob in crystal waters It s a change that s rendered four ramps on Lake Sakakawea unusuable not because of a lack of water but because they ve been submersed in it Linda Phelps Corps of Engineers There are other ramps in the area that are usable at this time and we actually completed a new ramp last week at one marina so this week we should have 27 usable ramps Debbie Kuehn KX News The rising levels have been accompanied by a rising number of smiles on many faces around here By simply adding water fishing improves and when fishing is good the number of boats on the lake multiplies and businesses sell more gas bait food and other supplies Harley Rath Brendel s Bay It increases all the business in the area From the Parshall to us out here it is such a positive attitude and things are going good Linda Phelps Corps of Engineers It makes people happy it makes me happy Debbie Kuehn KX News And if forecasters are right there could be more water on the way Harley Rath Brendel s Bay All reports are there is still 70 snowpack in the mountains Rumor has it we re looking at 20 feet this year Debbie Kuehn KX News Because you can always find higher ground but you can t catch fish in a sand dune Debbie Kuehn KX News As of today the Corps of Engineers says Lake Sakakawea s level is 1819 6 feet

Sakakawea on the Rise
Could Lake Sakakawea be on the rebound Sakakawea has risen 11 feet since May That s real good news for the Big Lake that has been hit hard by drought over the past six years Boat ramps had to be extended and access has been difficult and shut off in areas The official level of Lake Sakakawea at midnight was 1 817 8 feet about a tenth of a foot higher than last year and above this year s projections Flooding downstream on the Missouri River has slowed water releases from the Garrison Dam and snowmelt upstream is helping fill the lake

Thieves Target Your Batteries
It seems everyday we notice how the price of something else is going up You may have noticed how the price of car and boat batteries have increased But what s the connection between the cost of batteries and thefts of them Donnell Preskey has the story The cost of batteries has gone up significantly in the last year because lead which makes up 90 of a battery has skyrocketed Hugh McIntyre Interstate Battery the cost of batteries has doubled in the last year Lead is a commodity that s traded on open market like copper and steel - the more demand for that product drives cost up higher For every battery Interstate sells they like to recycle one In fact if you don t bring in a used battery you re charged 6 bucks That s not much of a problem these days McIntyre In past 12 months - farmsteads that have 50-100 batteries laying there It used to cost you to get the battery recycled - now we re paying 6 - 25 for battery depending on size Four years ago you would get maybe fifty cents for your used battery The increased pay out for used batteries can be linked to a recent rash of battery thefts Hugh McIntyre Interstate Battery people out there that drive around all look for is second source of income - driveways alleys something they can look for to make extra money Donnell Preskey Police say there s one way you can stop a thief from getting under your hood - lock your car In Bismarck Donnell Preskey KX News Interstate Battery takes their used batteries to a recycling center in Egan Minnesota Since the fall when prices increased for used batteries the cost of lead has decreased which is an indication that recycling is working

Controversial Author in Bismarck
His article created quite a controversy here in North Dakota Charles Bowden s article The Emptied Prairie gave what many people think is a wrong image of our state Today Bowden returns to North Dakota for the first time since the article was published Brad Feldman sits down with the author to get his take on the article and controversy that followed The auditorium at Bismarck State College is ready for a showdown A crowd of North Dakotan s many who were offended by what Charles Bowden wrote about North Dakota in this January article are here hear what Bowden has to say today Charles Bowden Emptied Prairie I think it is the natural resentment of the outsider coming in saying anything But there was nothing Instead Bowden had these people laughing about his article The Emptied Prairie and the comparison to his hometown of Tucson Arizona Charles Bowden The Emptied Prairie I have people that are not committed to where they live They think that I will be here two or three years and move onto somewhere else and that doesn t build healthy communities Although I must say it does build a very good crime rate North Dakota has people that are totally committed to this state I have never met a person here and doing the story I spent months here that disliked the state not one Bowden spent about three months in North Dakota getting to know some people before writing the article One of the couples he met Melvin and Morrene Wisdahl of Corinth a small town of six people The Wisdahl s former pastor sat in on the talk and admits he was a little troubled by the article but not in the way you might think Verle Reinicke North Dakotan Our inability sometimes to look at ourselves in different perspectives and to become defensive about it rather than seeing there is some truth in the article Bowden says from the outside people still consider North Dakota to be a cold fly over state with little to no good paying jobs He says this is why a state with the highest high school graduation rates still struggles with the out migration of people But despite the outside perception Bowden says the state has a lot to offer Charles Bowden The Emptied Prairie It baffles me why more people dont come to North Dakota because one of the things it has to sell besides peace and quiet is space No matter where you go it is just huge rolling land It is like being on an ocean only you dont need a sail boat Many people hearing these positive comments are left wondering why these comments were also not included in the article Brad Feldman KX News Bowden is in Bismarck today for the 2008 Alliance Summer Geography Institute where he is the keynote speaker He says he was some what surprised with some of the negative feedback he got from the article
