Bill introduced to allow stem-cell research


GOVERNOR RICHARDSON MAKES A BIG PUSH FOR STEM CELL RESEARCH AT UNM HOSPITAL AN ISSUE THAT COULD ROCK THE BOAT AS THE STATE LEGISLATURE SAILS INTO THE SECOND WEEK OF ITS SHORT SESSION STUART DYSON IS LIVE AT THE CAPITOL WITH WHAT THE GOVERNOR WANTS A WORLD-CLASS BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTER IS WHAT HE WANTS - AND THAT INCLUDES EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS - AND THAT S WHAT MAKES THIS A TOUGH ISSUE FOR MANY LAWMAKERS RICHARDSON TEAMS UP ONCE AGAIN WITH CODY UNSER OF NEW MEXICO S FAMOUS RACING FAMILY - A VICTIM OF A PARALYZING SPINAL CORD DISEASE I think we have the potential - an excellent medical school - with biotechnology - with the incentives we re offering to the private sector - to I really want to build this program in our state to be among the top five states CODY S DOCS SAY MORE STEM CELL RESEARCH COULD PREVENT SUCH CASES IN THE FUTURE SCIENTISTS SAY THEY CAN MAKE PROGRESS AGAINST ALZHEIMER S - PARKINSON S - MS - DIABETES - CANCER - AS LONG AS THEY RE ALLOWED TO USE STEM CELLS FROM HUMAN EMBRYOS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DEEPLY OPPOSES THE WHOLE IDEA - EVEN THOUGH ONLY TO- BE-DISCARDED CELLS FROM IN VITRO FERTILIZATION CLINICS WOULD BE USED - ALONG WITH OTHER STRICT RULES No cloning - no farming of embryos - no profit motive - those kinds of things are still in there AN ALMOST IDENTICAL BILL NARROWLY FAILED LAST YEAR - AND OPPONENTS PREDICT A REPEAT Those are highly charged issues which - you ve got firm positions on both sides - those are tough issues to solve in any 30 day session - much less a 60 day session - we discussed those in the last 60 day - we didn t get there SUPPORTERS ARE CONFIDENT THEY VE CHANGED SOME LAWMAKERS MINDS ON THIS ISSUE - AND SAY THEY LL HAVE THE VOTES TO PASS STEM CELL RESEARCH THIS TIME AT THE CAPITOL SD EWN4 A POSSIBLE NEW LIQUOR TAX COULD
