Dangerous Waters

A Mandan man is in the hospital after nearly drowning in the Heart River yesterday He s still in ICU but his condition is improving Swimming in rivers can be dangerous Donnell Preskey tells you what you need to watch for Donnell Preskey Reporting On a hot summer day a dip in the water feels so good And it s easy in our area with the Missouri and other water areas so close But underneath the soothing water could be something turbulent Nathaniel Umphrey ND Game amp amp Fish Any time swim in body of water with moving water with current large lakes rivers you run a risk of having an under tow That risk is here on the Heart River Tuesday a man almost drowned at this spot Umphrey Low head dams are common area of danger as current rolls over obstacle creates turbulance in water and under current The current also can create deep holes - authorities say there s a quick drop here too Umphrey If you get close enough and caught in under tow of the low head dam it s similar to a water fall it s going to pull you under and if you go under you re going to tumble never be able to right yourself and have a tough time figuring out which way is up Dams like this are on many rivers Log jams can have the same affect And the Mighty Missouri s strong current all the time is another hazard Umphrey On the Missouri River have constantly changing channel with holes eddie currents and step side banks that can cause similar hazards There s a sign posted before the dike near the Heart River warning swimmers but don t expect that everywhere Nathaniel Umphrey There s no way we can warn against every given danger available on a river take away from astetics if had signs all the way from nd to sd beware of undercurrent It sounds simple but yet it s worth repeating The best defense against drowning is wearing a life jacket Umphrey also says there s another concern on the Missouri River don t swim in high boat traffic areas like ramps Fox Island he says is particularly dangerous

Gonce Fishing 6-13

In this weeks edition of Gone Fishing we get a helpful tip on making sure that your catch stays on the line Hi and welcome to Gone Fishing I m Greg Schoneck You know I ve been family fishing with the kids recently It doesn t seem to matter how I explain it getting them to set the hook has been a problem Well today on gone fishing we re going to talk a little bit about setting the hook and why it s so important In a Walleye s mouth there is all of this boney cartilage It is tough to get a hook buried into that When I talk about set the hook what I mean is a snap of your rod a lift of your arm frantic reeling until you get that hook buried in there and you feel a pressure then you relax On top of all this you ve got the monofilament working against you It s very stretchy much like a rubber band You need to stretch that monofilament out and bury the hook into the walleye s mouth Well let s put this walleye into the live well and hopefully we can get another one and I ll show you how it s done Once you got that hook set them it s time to slow down Nice and easy once the hook is set Before the hook is set you just drive it home but it s nice and easy after that Nice and easy brings more fish into the boat once the hook is in there Ah nice Sakakawea walleye He s not quite ready to come into the boat Remember of them hook sets hard frantic reeling after that slow and easy Until next time I m Greg Schoneck and I m Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing: Jigs

In the past few editions of Gone Fishing we ve learned how to pick a jigging rod and tonight Greg Schoneck shows us what to look for in a jig Hi and welcome to Gone Fishing I m Greg Schoneck You know when it comes to jigging there are 2 things I want to consider every time Size of jig and hook style Well today on Gone Fishing we re going to talk about both Jig size is 1 for me I m trying to get a jig that s light and going to drop very slowly so I want the lightest possible jig I can A slowly dropping jig will put more fish in the boat Second consideration is hook size On any jig I m using for live bait I want a hook that has a lot of gap right here between the barb and the shank because that s going to let the point of the hook enter the Walleye s mouth Lots of shank and light jig more walleyes in the boat Well let s put this to work for us and see what happens There we go Remember it s jig size You have to stay in contact with the bottom but you want your jig to drop as slow as possible It s that slow drop that will put more fish in the livewell Also remember the second thing It s that gap between the barb and the shank Pick a jig with lots of gap and you ll set more hooks Eat more fish Let s get this little guy in here and see what we got Ah come here little fella Yes indeed Until next time I m Greg Schoneck and I m Gone Fishing
