Marina Breaks Ground Near Garrison
After being left high and dry for years Fort Stevenson State Park is tapping back into the water of Lake Sakakawea with a new marina Ground is broken on the more than 10-million dollar project earlier today It should be ready for use by 2009 Shaun Sipma has the story Nat Sound It was ground that was broken today at Fort Stevenson State park but it s the water that s been sorely missed Senator Byron Dorgan D North Dakota This very large lake is a terrific natural resource for our state but this natural resource doesn t provide full flower benefits for this state unless you have access to it The fact is we haven t had adequate access to it Since the late 1990 s drought in the Upper Missouri Basin devastated Lake Sakakawea dropping levels to record lows and leaving many once active boat ramps and marina s high and dry Senator Kent Conrad D North Dakota The pictures that were taken that were in all the news media showed the marina high and dry but it was impossible to show was how far the water had receded and it was really a stark picture Now that picture is going to be repainted A new Marina will be built here at Garrison Bay less than a mile west of the old one in De Trobrian Bay that is now landlocked Robert Michaels Army Corps of Engineers But this new Fort Stevenson will provide lake access at a much lower elevation if drought continues if drought conditions continues as expected Douglass Prchal ND State Dept of Recreation It does enhance and replace visitor service that has been absent for a number of years and the success of the park is directly related to enhance facilities the marina being one of those Paul Schlichting Garrison Chamber President I always ask Dick what park visitation was for the year If he said it s down 20 percent that s what the numbers are at my business and that means about 600 000 dollars And that s just one business in Garrison 10 million dollars in federal funds has been secured to pay for the project which should wrap up and be open to boats the summer of 2009 Governor John Hoeven R North Dakota The Friends of Lake Sakakawea really had a vision on this thing and pursued it and stayed with it and worked on it the right way all the way through Terry Fleck Friend of Sakakawea I d just like to think this is just the beginning of many many good things to happen on this big lake At Fort Stevenson State Park Shaun Sipma KX News Planning for the new marina began in 2004

Gone Fishing: Sept. 5th, 2007
Like a good fish story there s more than one opinion on how to fish This week Greg Schoneck shows how two people in the same boat may look at fishing in different ways Greg Schoneck Gone Fishing There are two sides to everything from how to properly hook up your bait to how to properly clean fish Experts often disagree Hi and welcome to Gone Fishing I m Greg Schoneck and today I m going to show you the proper way how to hook up bait for the right presentation Julie Schoneck There are two sides to everything from how to properly clean your fish to how to hook up your bait Experts often disagree Hi and welcome to Gone Fishing and I m Julie Schoneck and today I m going to show you the correct way to hook your bait for the best presentation Greg When I hook a minnow on a Lindy I like I like to delicately hook them right through the bottom lip for the proper presentation Julie When I hook a minnow on a Lindy I like to hook them through both lips for a stronger presentation Greg When I hook a crawler on a jig I like to hook them right in the middle for a deadly double presentation Julie When I hook a crawler on a jig I like to hook them right here on the end and then I like to pinch them in half because it leaves a great scent trail Greg When I hook a leech on a Lindy-actually I m a little bit squeemish when it comes to leeches Julie Whenever I hook a leech on a Lindy I always say hook em thin to win Greg When I m choosing colors for a crank bait I always look for the natural colors for a proper presentation Julie Whenever I choose crank baits I choose the bright colors for a flashy presentation Greg For the dramatic conclusion to this expert advice tune in next week Until then I m Greg Schoneck and I m Gone Fishing
'Call Before You Dig' Has New Tool
You ve probably seen the commercial the cost of building the state capital the cost of constructing the Garrison Dam and then the cost of putting in a mailbox That mailbox is pricey in the commercial mainly because an underground wire was cut Making sure you don t fall into the same boat is easier now thanks to a new hotline Perry Olson has the details Perry Olson - KX News You know how to dial this number Dailing 9-1-1 But there is a new three digit number more than 1400 companies hope you use before heading out to the yard this spring 811 Marty Dahl - Verendrye Electric We have a one call system in place but this will make it easier for contractors and for everyone else who may just be working on the weekend The campaign kicked off this month to get the word out 811 is the number to call to make sure you don t do damage to underground wires saving money and maybe more Marty If you hit it just right with a metal piece of equipment it could kill you and that is one reason to get things located The process is very simple once the call is made a locate takes only a few minutes but can assure the job gets done safely Jeff Smette - Lowe s Floral Landscape Designer We just finished planting trees for the Max school and where we wanted to plant them was right on top of a line and if we wouldn t have done a request we would have been in big trouble Marty Once you dig up a line or cable it may cost thousands of dollars to fix it where your project was just going to cost hundreds So remember if you are digging this year dial 8-1-1 and stay away from the need for 9-1-1 Perry Olson KX News

The Face of Homelessness
What does a homeless person look like Fact is you may have come face to face with homelessness and not even known it That s because most of the people considered homeless in our area are considered hidden homeless Debbie Kuehn has more Safely tucked into bed on a chilly February night She slept peacefully unaware that her world was about to drastically change Erica Minot My neighbor next door to me woke me up and said there was a fire It was a nightmare come true 29-year-old Erica suddenly realized she was homeless not living on the street in a cardboard box or sleeping in her car homeless but Erica had become a member of Minot s hidden homeless population Wendy Rupert Vegas Motel Mgr I was a single mom for quite a long time and I know the struggles you face everday And sometimes it s hard to make ends meet and you just need a helping hand A stroke of luck brought her here to the Vegas Motel where she was given a bed in exchange for making some beds Erica is not the first person to find refuge here Over the past few years manager Wendy Rupert has opened her heart to many Wendy We ve had over 30 people that we ve helped in the last three years that have been homeless Most of it has been temporary A nd they work for a wh ile they get back on their feet And I have three that have continued to work and they ve been valuable employees for the past year 19-year-old Tiffany found herself in the same boat folloiwing a disagreement with her parents Tiffany She put me up for a few months and I ve been working for her basically And she helped me get an apartment basically And I m still working here Now as the Minot Homeless Coalition joins with other agencies in a nationwide effort to combat homelessness Rupert is uping the anti She s challenging other local businesses to the same Wendy From my perspective there are some challenges in employing a homeless person and challenges in wodking with a homeless person and I wanted to bring that perspective to the table Rupert says if communty leaders really want to make a dent in the problem they need to do more than talk It s been a rude awakening for Erica and Tiffany But when we come to terms witih the idea that homelessness is everyone s problem That could be an eye opener for many of us The community is receiving some federal money to help combat homelessness but in order to receive that money a strategic plan must first be in place Leaders say they are currently working on that plan and hope to have it done soon
